Exploring the Benefits of a Traffic Signal Preemption
Traffic signal
preemption TSP (also known as traffic signal prioritization) is a system that
permits the operator to annul the regular operation of traffic lights. The most
common use of these systems is that they operate traffic signals in the path of
an emergency vehicle to stop conflicting traffic and move the emergency vehicle
right-of-way, thereby slowing down the response times and enhancing traffic
safety. Traffic
Signal preemption can also be used on light-rail, tram, and bus rapid
transit systems to give priority access to public transportation through
intersections and railroad systems at crossings to avoid collisions.
TSP provides the
Green light for emergency vehicles, trains, and light rail. Preemption differs
from priority because it takes charge of the intersection and immediately
changes all directions to red except for the direction involving emergency
vehicles, trains, or light rail. Preemption will annul any signal priority and
will terminate a lengthy green light in favor of the vehicle that is requesting
preemption. This helps emergency vehicles reduce the time it takes them to
reach their destination by clearing a path via traffic signals. It also
improves safety measures by allowing the emergency vehicle, train, or light
rail to proceed by providing a red light to all vehicles, pedestrians, and
bicyclists that are expected to stop.
The benefits of
preemption systems are that they can very effectively reduce response times or
duration for emergency vehicles. Nationwide studies have shown a 15 to 50
percent reduction in response times and a 75 percent decrease in crashes that
involve emergency vehicles. These improvements have a great impact on the
results of medical emergencies and greatly improve traffic safety.
At Emtrac
Systems, they perfectly combine radio transmission, cellular, and GPS
technology into all together one easy-to-use tool. Their newest designed
preemption systems, like GPS, cellular, and radio technologies, can help in
clearing traffic well beforehand and easily lessen emergency response times.
