How smoothly does Smart Traffic Lights can enable Emergency Vehicle Priority?

Emergency vehicle priority at intersections is quite helpful in helping fire trucks and ambulances to reach their destination safely and more quickly. This is the software that helps in managing the traffic.

Every minute counts in the time of emergency. But in urban areas, ambulances, and other rescue vehicles, often have difficulty getting ahead due to dense traffic or construction sites. When sirens and flashing lights are used by vehicles, the rescue teams do not have to stop at red lights; however, this can be hazardous for other road users at the intersection. So, what action can be taken to help fire trucks and ambulances reach their destination more quickly and safely?

A German research project, "SIRENE," focuses on solutions that implement emergency vehicle priority.

Commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, in this project, the researchers have worked on an intelligent navigation system that comprises short-term changes in traffic into route planning solutions. The experts also tested different procedures to manage traffic lights smartly and thus enable emergency vehicle priority.

Emtrac's Emergency Vehicle Priority system is used for traffic-adaptive signal control. This helps in continually optimizing the switching of traffic lights and thus helps reduce waiting times for public transport, cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. The system highlights the traffic situation, calculates various control options, and uses the best option.

A top-priority security or emergency vehicle priority system requires free passage wherein the software manages the traffic lights accordingly, allowing the vehicle to pass the intersection without slowing down – without influencing other road users as little as possible.

Emtrac System helps build the foundation for easily equipped traffic lights with controllers, enabling emergency vehicles to pass more quickly and safely.
