A Traffic Signal Preemption Device is a critical component in modern urban traffic management, allowing designated vehicles to alter the normal operation of traffic lights for improved speed and safety. These devices are commonly used by emergency services, public transit, and railway systems to gain priority at intersections.
Preemption systems typically rely on transmitters installed in vehicles and receivers at signalized intersections. When a vehicle equipped with a transmitter approaches, it sends a signal—often via infrared, GPS, or radio frequency—to a receiver connected to the traffic signal controller. This signal prompts the traffic light to change, usually granting an early green or holding an existing green light to let the priority vehicle pass through safely and without delay.
